Quality Technology Services Charged for 30M Gallons of Unpaid Water in Georgia
Georgia's Quality Technology Services is charged nearly $150,000 for over 29 million gallons of unaccounted water use linked to a data center. This incident highlights the increasing scrutiny over water consumption amid ongoing drought conditions in the state.
Quality Technology Services (QTS) was billed approximately $150,000 for consuming nearly 30 million gallons of water without proper authorization, impacting local residents in Fayetteville, Georgia. The incident arose after residents reported low water pressure, prompting an investigation that revealed unauthorized industrial water connections to the data center.
The facility, which spans 615 acres and is partially operational, has faced backlash due to its significant water and electricity demands amid ongoing drought conditions in Georgia. The Fayetteville City Council has responded by banning new data centers in the city. Despite the charges, no fines were imposed on QTS for the violations, raising concerns among residents regarding the utility's prioritization of customer relationships over regulatory enforcement.
