Queens Environmental Groups Sue NYC Over Flushing Creek De-Pollution Plan
Environmental groups have filed a lawsuit against NYC's Department of Environmental Protection concerning a chlorination plan for Flushing Creek, arguing it could harm local water quality and aquatic life. The lawsuit claims the city failed to conduct an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) to assess potential negative effects of residual chlorine and disinfection byproducts. The groups seek an EIS to explore alternatives that effectively address sewage overflow issues in the area.

Environmental groups, including Guardians of Flushing Bay, Riverkeeper, and Save the Sound, have filed a lawsuit against NYC's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) regarding the Flushing Creek Combined Sewer Runoff Disinfection Facilities Project. The plan involves chlorination to address sewage pollution but has raised concerns over residual chemicals harming aquatic life.
The lawsuit, filed on Feb. 15, alleges that DEP did not conduct a required Environmental Impact Study (EIS) to assess potential adverse effects. The groups argue the plan fails to address the root causes of pollution, emphasizing the need for comprehensive long-term solutions, such as the Renewable Rikers proposal for renewable energy and upgraded wastewater treatment.
