Queensland Government Proposes Call-Ins for Potentia and Trina Solar Battery Projects
The Queensland government is moving to call in two major battery storage projects: Potentia Energy's 300 MW Capricorn and Trina Solar's 200 MW Pleystowe, despite local opposition citing insufficient community consultation. The Capricorn project, valued at $500 million, has received federal backing but faced council rejection, while Trina Solar is appealing to the Planning and Environment Court amidst changing state planning rules. The LNP government's actions come as it maintains a commitment to coal-fired energy through 2050, having previously revoked renewable energy targets.

The Queensland LNP government plans to call in two significant battery storage projects: Potentia Energy's 300 MW Capricorn project and Trina Solar's 200 MW Pleystowe project. The Capricorn battery, a $500 million initiative, is among four projects that received federal underwriting agreements.
Local LNP member Glenn Kelly has opposed both projects, citing inadequate community consultation. The call-in for the Capricorn project was officially gazetted, following a request from Kelly and Rockhampton deputy mayor Drew Wickerson.
Despite council recommendations for approval, the council declined to authorize the projects. Trina Solar has appealed to the Planning and Environment Court, but the state's recent planning rule changes may affect this appeal. The LNP government has previously revoked renewable energy targets and expressed commitment to coal-fired generators until 2050.
