Quintana Roo Government Enhances Sargassum Management Strategy for 2026
Quintana Roo's government is implementing an enhanced strategy for the 2026 sargassum season, focusing on preventing seaweed from reaching beaches. This includes the deployment of a new, larger sargassum collection vessel, which will double current collection capacity to 624 tons per day.

The Mexican government, in collaboration with Quintana Roo officials, is advancing a comprehensive strategy to address the sargassum crisis. A new vessel, expected to significantly increase collection capacity, will be utilized alongside enhanced satellite monitoring and local operational deployment.
This initiative aims to tackle one of the primary environmental challenges in the Mexican Caribbean, driven by climate change. Additionally, plans for a Circular Economy Park in Puerto Morelos will turn sargassum into industrial pellets, promoting sustainable development. The strategy's success hinges on coordinated efforts across multiple sectors, addressing significant waste management gaps in the region.
