Raw Sewage Contaminates Cofimvaba River Due to Malfunctioning Treatment Plant
The Cofimvaba River in the Eastern Cape is contaminated with raw sewage from a malfunctioning wastewater treatment plant, affecting local communities. Residents are using the polluted water for cooking and laundry. The Chris Hani District Municipality is aware of the issue but has not effectively addressed it despite appointing a contractor for refurbishments three years ago. Only one aerator is functioning, and plans for comprehensive assessments and upgrades are underway.

Raw sewage is spilling into the Cofimvaba River in the Eastern Cape due to a malfunctioning wastewater treatment plant. Villagers have been using the contaminated water for cooking and laundry. Sithembele Plata, chairperson of the Cofimvaba Ratepayers Association, reported that a contractor was appointed three years ago to refurbish the treatment plant, but sewage continues to flow into the river.
The district municipality acknowledged that only one of the two aerators is operational. Assessments for upgrades are planned, but challenges persist, including vandalism at nearby pump stations. The municipality conducts regular water quality testing and maintenance.
