Raytheon Secures Contract for SeaRAM System in Australian Mogami-Class Frigates
Raytheon has been contracted by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to provide SeaRAM missile defense systems for Australia's SEA3000 frigate program. Deliveries are set to commence in late 2028, with the first frigate expected by December 2029.
Raytheon will supply SeaRAM missile defense systems for the Royal Australian Navy’s SEA3000 program, specifically for the first three of potentially 11 Mogami-class frigates. Work will occur in Louisville, Kentucky, with deliveries expected to start in late 2028, and the first frigate is due by December 2029.
The SeaRAM system combines the Phalanx CIWS with the RIM-116 RAM missile, designed to defend against various airborne threats, including cruise missiles and drones, with an effective range of 10 km. The total estimated cost for the initial three vessels is up to A$10 billion. This acquisition strengthens Australia's naval capabilities amid increasing security pressures in the Indo-Pacific region.
