Realizing the Potential of Low-Emission Hydrogen: A Present-Day Policy Challenge
The International Energy Agency (IEA) asserts that the realization of low-emission hydrogen's potential is no longer a matter of awaiting future technological innovations; instead, it has become a critical policy challenge of the present. In the lead-up to the release of its Global Hydrogen Review 2025, the IEA highlights two significant hurdles: the elevated costs associated with green and blue hydrogen compared to conventional grey hydrogen, and the uncertainties surrounding demand.
These factors are impeding the global rollout of clean hydrogen solutions. Despite a notable increase in project announcements for low-emission hydrogen production over the last five years, analysts from the IEA point out that the necessary final investment decisions (FIDs) to bring these projects to fruition are lagging. This situation underscores the urgent need for effective policy measures to catalyze investment and accelerate the transition to a cleaner hydrogen economy.
