Repairs to Tijuana Wastewater Pipe Completed in 3 Days, Ending River Discharge

HYDROGEN

Repairs to a collapsed wastewater pipe in Tijuana, specifically the Insurgentes Collector, have been completed, halting flows to the Tijuana River. The U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) reported that the incident, which began on January 15, diverted approximately 11.5 million gallons per day into the river.

The repairs took only 3 days, quicker than the estimated 10 days. The Comisión Internacional de Límites y Aguas (CILA) is monitoring the system for proper operation. No significant increase in transboundary flow or hydrogen sulfide levels was noted during the incident. Transboundary flow peaked at 59.31 million gallons per day on Saturday, with the South Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant showing influent levels at 23.26 million gallons per day, below its permitted capacity.
