Research Links Hydropower Dams to Decline of Fish Stocks in Brazil’s Madeira River
A study led by the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) highlights the negative impact of hydropower dams on fish stocks in the Madeira River, particularly following the Santo Antônio and Jirau dams. The research, involving 120 local fishers, analyzed catch data from the Humaitá Fishing Colony between May 2018 and April 2019, comparing it to data from before the Santo Antônio dam's construction.
Results indicate a significant decline in fish populations, with some areas experiencing up to a 90% reduction in stocks. The study found that fish species are now caught in different locations and times, disrupting traditional fishing practices and leading to increased distances for fishers.
Since 2013, local fishers have sought compensation for losses linked to the dams through legal action. The research aims to support these claims and facilitate sustainable fishing practices in the region.
