Research on Biodegradation of Compostable Plastics in Soil
A joint German-Austrian project investigates the degradation rate of certified compostable plastic fragments in soil. The study seeks to establish scientific data on the behavior of these materials following compost treatment, essential for improving waste management practices.

The project titled "Continued biodegradation of fragments of certified compostable plastic films in the soil under real conditions" aims to analyze how compostable plastic films degrade in soil after composting. Conducted over 24 months, the study involves two biowaste facilities in Austria and Germany, with regular sampling to assess the degradation of remaining plastic fragments.
The research is supported by institutions including the University of Vienna and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, backed by the Austrian Microplastic-Free Alliance and the German Natural Circular Economy Initiative. Findings could influence waste management policies and practices, particularly concerning the viability of compostable plastics in organic waste collection.
