Research Project SALSA Advances Aluminium-Ion Battery Technology for Energy Storage

ENERGY STORAGE

The SALSA project focuses on the validation and development of lithium-free aluminium-ion batteries (AIB) for efficient and environmentally friendly energy storage. The project addresses applications for grid stabilization and tests the new cell chemistry using standardized battery testing methods.

AIBs are highlighted for their excellent cycle stability and energy density, making them suitable for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) applications in sensitive industrial sectors. The project builds on the INNOBATT project, which produced small-format AIB cells and integrated them into a system demonstrator.

The goal of SALSA is to develop scalable materials for rechargeable AIBs with improved performance metrics. The consortium combines expertise in material development, cell testing, and battery manufacturing to ensure iterative improvement of AIB technology through practical testing and feedback loops.
