Restroom Project at Old Lighthouse Beach Nears Completion Amid Environmental Concerns
Construction of permanent restrooms at Old Lighthouse Beach in Buxton is set to begin soon, with an estimated completion by July. The project, funded at $400,000 to $450,000, aims to replace temporary facilities and enhance visitor experience, but the beach remains closed due to ongoing contamination issues.

The installation of permanent restroom facilities at Old Lighthouse Beach, Buxton, is anticipated to commence shortly, with completion projected by early July. This $400,000 to $450,000 project, a collaboration between the National Park Service and Outer Banks Forever, aims to provide adequate amenities for visitors, replacing insufficient portable toilets.
Despite progress, the beach is closed due to environmental contamination linked to a former military site. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is nearing the completion of soil remediation efforts, and further evaluations are planned to assess reopening potential. The restroom structure will offer four unisex facilities and is designed to withstand coastal conditions, with funding sourced from various grants and donations.
