Reuse Pilot Advances Grocery and Takeaway Packaging in Europe
A €2 million project led by VTT Technical Research Centre and the University of Vaasa introduces a reusable packaging system in Europe, targeting a reduction in annual packaging waste projected to reach 80 million tonnes. The initiative involves 22 partners, aiming for scalable and economically viable solutions in compliance with EU waste reduction regulations by 2030.

The Reusify project, a collaboration among VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the University of Vaasa, aims to create a reusable packaging model for grocery and takeaway food. This initiative, with a budget of €2 million, includes 22 partners, such as S Group and K Group, and is designed to operate nationally and industrially.
A six-month trial in autumn 2025 at K-Supermarket Ratina tested deposit-based reusable containers, receiving positive consumer feedback, with 65% expressing interest in using them again. This system integrates automation, industrial washing, logistics, and digital tracking, potentially creating a commercially viable framework as EU waste reduction targets approach. The global market for reuse systems is projected to reach €1.45 billion by 2035, indicating economic benefits alongside environmental goals.
