Richmond, California, is transitioning from its long-standing reliance on the Chevron refinery, which has operated since 1902, toward renewable energy solutions. A $550 million settlement with Chevron led to the withdrawal of a ballot measure aimed at reducing the city's fossil fuel dependency.

The California Energy Commission awarded Richmond a $750,000 grant for an Offshore Wind Conceptual Planning Project, positioning the city for future offshore wind industry activities. Additional companies like Viridi Parente, supported by a $9.3 million grant, are establishing operations in Richmond.

Other renewable projects include Glydways' electric vehicle testing ground and Raven SR's hydrogen fuel plant. City leaders are exploring sustainable energy options while navigating budget constraints.

The state supports offshore wind, although federal opposition has emerged, complicating the path to renewable energy. Mayor Eduardo Martinez envisions a future where green businesses replace traditional fossil fuel industries.
