Rio de Janeiro to Acquire Supercomputer for AI Development Under Rio AI City Project
Rio de Janeiro will receive a supercomputer this year to develop AI solutions aimed at improving urban life, as part of the Rio AI City project led by Mayor Eduardo Paes. The city will acquire an NVIDIA supercomputer and establish a consortium of universities, including Coppe/UFRJ, PUC-Rio, and IMPA, to create local AI tools.
The supercomputer will be located in Porto Maravilha, with installation expected in the second half of the year. The municipal government is mapping sectors using AI, with existing projects like Civitas for public safety and health system integration.
The city is also promoting digital literacy through Naves do Conhecimento, which offer free technology courses and internet access. The goal is to ensure equitable access to technology and prevent AI from exacerbating social inequalities.
