Rio Grande do Norte Risks Losing R$ 232.6 Billion in Data Center Investments
Without competitive regulations, Rio Grande do Norte could miss out on R$ 232.6 billion in data center investments, impacting job creation and tax revenue. The state is lagging behind neighboring regions in attracting these projects due to regulatory uncertainties.

Rio Grande do Norte (RN) may forfeit up to R$ 232.6 billion in data center investments without establishing competitive regulations, according to the Renewable Energy Commission of FIERN. This includes potential losses in infrastructure and energy investments, affecting job creation with up to 53,670 direct and indirect positions at stake.
The state risks losing R$ 497.6 million annually in ICMS revenues due to inadequate regulatory frameworks compared to neighboring states like Ceará and Piauí. The upcoming resolution on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is scheduled for discussion on April 14, 2026, but RN's slow regulatory pace could deter investors.
Environmental and legal uncertainties, including water usage perceptions, hinder potential growth in the sector. The absence of a clear regulatory landscape may amplify risks and reduce competitiveness against states with more favorable conditions.
