Rio Tinto and BHP Complete Land Exchange for Resolution Copper Project in Arizona
Rio Tinto and BHP have secured federal land for the Resolution Copper project in Arizona after a ruling by the US Court of Appeals on March 13. The land exchange involved transferring about 930 hectares of federal land above the orebody to the joint venture while protecting over 2,185 hectares of environmentally sensitive land.
The project, located about 100 km east of Phoenix, aims to meet 25% of U.S. copper demand and contribute $1 billion annually to the state's economy. The partners plan to invest $500 million over two years on enabling work, creating around 100 jobs. However, the project faces opposition from the San Carlos Apache Tribe due to cultural concerns regarding the area above the mine.
