Rivian Utilizes Retired EV Batteries for Energy Savings
Rivian is implementing a system that repurposes over 100 retired EV batteries to reduce electricity costs at its Illinois factory. This initiative aims to enhance renewable energy usage and could serve as a model for future electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Rivian will install more than 100 retired EV batteries at its Illinois plant to create an energy storage system, potentially decreasing electricity expenses. This collaboration with Redwood Materials, a company specializing in battery management, aims to utilize old batteries for grid energy, allowing energy to be stored when supply exceeds demand and used during peak times.
The setup will provide approximately 10 megawatt-hours of storage capacity, supporting the factory's operations without fully powering it. Rivian's current energy sources include solar panels and a 2.8 megawatt-wind turbine, which are now integrated with the battery system. The initiative could lead to substantial savings and promote the use of renewable energy in manufacturing and public EV charging infrastructure.
