RMIT Advances Green Hydrogen Production with Low-Cost Titanium Dioxide
Australian researchers have demonstrated that modifying titanium dioxide can increase green hydrogen production by over 80 times. This breakthrough could significantly reduce emissions in hard-to-abate industries, pending further real-world trials.

Researchers at RMIT University and two Chinese institutions have enhanced titanium dioxide (TiO2) to produce over 80 times more green hydrogen than untreated versions. This advancement could lower production costs and emissions in industries such as shipping and steelmaking.
The study detailed modifications including the addition of nickel and altering energy transfer within the compound, which improved efficiency when exposed to ultraviolet light. Although testing was conducted under controlled conditions, further work is necessary to validate performance in real-world settings. The findings suggest a shift towards using low-cost materials, reducing reliance on expensive metals like platinum, and could help scale up hydrogen production.
