Rolls-Royce Implements HVO in Engine Testing to Reduce Emissions
Rolls-Royce has transitioned its engine testing in Germany to hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO), reducing carbon emissions significantly. This shift, completed in 2025, is part of a broader industry trend towards cleaner fuels.

Rolls-Royce has replaced conventional diesel with hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) for its engine testing in Germany, including sites in Friedrichshafen, Augsburg, and Ruhstorf. Initial trials began in September 2024, and the full transition was achieved by the end of 2025, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 3,200 tonnes.
HVO has been validated for key mtu engine series since 2021, allowing existing engines to operate without modifications. The fuel leads to a 40% reduction in particulate emissions and up to an 8% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions.
Its lifecycle carbon emissions can be up to 90% lower than fossil diesel. As HVO use expands across various sectors, including rail and mining, Rolls-Royce is providing support for customers navigating this transition.
