The Rufiji Basin Water Board has launched a $6 million water infrastructure project in Mbarali District, funded by Japan and the World Bank, to improve water resources for five villages over three years. The initiative aims to enhance domestic supply, agriculture, and livestock management while promoting environmental protection through modern infrastructure and relocating farmers from sensitive areas. Additionally, the project addresses challenges such as climate change and agrochemical pollution, vital for the Usangu Basin's role in national economic activities.

Over Sh6 billion will be invested in water infrastructure improvements in the Usangu Basin, Mbarali District, benefiting five villages. The project, funded by Japan through the World Bank, is implemented by the Rufiji Basin Water Board and aims to conserve water resources for domestic supply, agriculture, and livestock.
The initiative began this financial year and will last three years. The project also addresses environmental protection by transitioning from traditional watering practices to modern infrastructure strategies, including designated livestock areas.
Additionally, measures are being taken to relocate farmers from within 60 metres of water sources and compensate them for alternative livelihoods. The Usangu Basin is vital for national economic activities, including hydropower, with 15 percent of water for major dams sourced from it. Challenges such as climate change and agrochemical pollution are also being addressed.
