Russia Retires Dmitry Donskoy, Last of Typhoon-Class Submarines
The Dmitry Donskoy (TK-208), the last of Russia's Typhoon-class submarines, was retired in February 2023. The Typhoon-class, designed during the Cold War, was the largest submarine class ever built, displacing 48,000 tons and capable of carrying 20 R-39 nuclear missiles. Originally planned for twelve, only six were completed due to high costs. The submarine featured advanced design elements for survivability and luxury amenities for the crew. The Dmitry Donskoy will serve as a museum ship in Saint Petersburg post-retirement.
