RWE Calls for Cancellation of 2026 German Offshore Wind Auction, Advocates for CfDs
RWE Offshore Wind's CEO has urged the German government to cancel the 2026 offshore wind auction and advance legislation for Contracts for Difference (CfDs). Following modifications to the WindSeeG at the end of 2025, the government plans to auction up to 2.5 GW of capacity in 2026 using a design that previously failed to secure bids.
At the TenneT 'ReThink Offshore' event in Berlin, CEO Sven Utermöhlen emphasized the need to postpone the auction until key issues are resolved. He identified three critical challenges: creating a market design that ensures bankable investments with two-sided CfDs, enhancing system and cost efficiency through improved spatial planning and grid utilization, and aligning expansion targets with feasible construction and financing capabilities.
