Ryanair's Emissions Rise Amidst Overall Declines from Other Irish Polluters
Ryanair's carbon emissions reached 12.3 million tonnes in 2025, a 2% increase from 2024, contrasting with reductions seen in other major Irish emitters. The airline's growth has outpaced its emission intensity reductions despite efforts to adopt modern aircraft and improve fuel efficiency.

Ryanair reported a 2% increase in greenhouse gas emissions to 12.3 million tonnes in 2025, despite a doubling of passenger numbers over the last decade, leading to reduced emissions per passenger. The airline received 2.1 million tonnes in carbon allowances from the EU's Emissions Trading System (ETS) and exceeded this allocation.
Other major Irish emitters, including ESB and Irish Cement, showed reductions in emissions, with ESB's emissions decreasing by 2% to just over 2.09 million tonnes. Overall, Ireland's combined emissions from 117 large industrial sectors fell by 5.5%, below the EU average of 6.9%. The introduction of ETS2 is postponed until 2028, raising concerns over potential fuel cost increases.
