Saab Partners with Startups to Enhance Defence Technology Amid Rising Budgets
Saab's CTO Petter Bedoire discusses the company's shift towards partnerships with startups to address capability gaps in defence technology. With Sweden's defence budget projected to reach SEK 138bn by 2025, Saab is focused on integrating AI and space technologies. The company acquired BlueBear and invested in Helsing, while also signing a memorandum with Iceye. Saab aims to strengthen the defence startup ecosystem and is receiving numerous pitches from new companies, emphasizing the need for unique solutions in areas like energy storage and secure communications.

Saab's CTO, Petter Bedoire, highlighted the company's strategy to partner with startups due to rapid advancements in defence technology and increased defence budgets in Sweden, projected at SEK 138bn for 2025. Saab has acquired UK-based BlueBear and invested in German startup Helsing while collaborating with Finnish company Iceye.
The firm is focused on enhancing its capabilities in AI and space technology and aims to strengthen the defence startup ecosystem, receiving around 20 startup pitches weekly. Bedoire noted that while many startups address similar issues, there is a demand for unique solutions in sectors like energy storage and secure communications.
