Saline City Council Enacts One-Year Moratorium on Data Center Construction

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

The Saline City Council approved a one-year moratorium on data center construction during its meeting on January 12. This temporary measure aims to allow the council and community to evaluate the long-term effects of data centers on the area.

The moratorium prohibits any approvals or reviews of data center projects for its duration. City staff will study relevant laws and prepare a proposed plan for potential amendments to the Zoning Ordinance related to data center applications within the year. City Manager Dan Swallow noted that while the goal is to present ordinance language within this timeframe, the moratorium could be extended if progress toward regulations is demonstrated.
