Samskip Selects Norwegian Hydrogen for Green Hydrogen Supply for First Hydrogen-Powered Container Vessels

FUEL CELLHYDROGEN

Samskip has chosen Norwegian Hydrogen as the preferred supplier of green hydrogen for its two hydrogen-powered SeaShuttle vessels, set to operate between the Netherlands and Norway in 2027. A memorandum of understanding signed in December confirms that Norwegian Hydrogen will provide fuel from its 25MW Rjukan liquid green hydrogen project, which reached a final investment decision in April.

The 135m, 500-TEU vessels will utilize a hydrogen propulsion system that includes a cryogenic storage unit and 3.2MW fuel cells. Operations are planned along the route from Rotterdam to Oslo by Q2 2027.

Liquid hydrogen production from Rjukan is expected to commence in 2028, and interim supply details remain undisclosed. The vessels are projected to reduce annual CO2 emissions by 27,000 tonnes. The project is supported by €31.5m from the EU Innovation Fund and €13.2m from European Hydrogen Bank auctions.
