Samsung Heavy Certifies Wind-Assisted LNG Carrier Design
Samsung Heavy Industries has obtained basic design certification for an LNG carrier utilizing a wind-assisted propulsion system. This development aligns with a projected growth in the wind propulsion market, anticipated to reach $2.5 billion by 2050.

Samsung Heavy Industries has received certification for a wind-assisted LNG carrier design from the Korean Register and the Liberian Registry. The vessel incorporates a wing sail structure to enhance propulsion efficiency and addresses navigational visibility issues by positioning the wheelhouse at the bow.
The company aims to further improve fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions by integrating the wing sail with its Saver Wind air lubrication system. Samsung Heavy plans to extend this wind propulsion technology to other eco-friendly vessels, including those for ammonia and carbon dioxide transport. The global wind propulsion technology market is projected to grow to 3.5 trillion won ($2.5 billion) by 2050, indicating significant business potential in this sector.
