SANEDI Launches Microgrid Pilot to Evaluate Decentralized Energy Systems in South Africa
SANEDI has launched a monitored microgrid pilot project in South Africa to evaluate decentralized energy systems across industrial, mining, defense, and household sectors. The initiative, supported by the Department of Defence, combines demand-side efficiency with photovoltaic generation and battery storage, aiming to gather technical, environmental, and financial data while addressing potential regulatory challenges for broader applications.

SANEDI is launching a monitored microgrid pilot project in South Africa to assess the performance of decentralized energy systems in industrial, mining, defence, and household applications. The project integrates demand-side efficiency measures with photovoltaic generation and battery storage, while monitoring environmental factors such as heat and humidity.
Co-supported by the Department of Defence, the initiative aims to collect technical, environmental, and financial data from a demonstration site. The project adopts a demand-first approach and seeks to inform analyses relevant to various sectors, although broader applications may face regulatory challenges.
