Santa Maria Airport Board to Discuss Budget Following American Airlines Flight Cancellations
The Santa Maria Airport Board will review its budget after American Airlines announced the discontinuation of flights to Phoenix, effective May 7, 2026. The route, which started in October 2025, failed to meet performance expectations, leading to low ticket sales and unprofitable operations. General Manager Martin Pehl expressed disappointment but noted a commitment to learn from the experience and prepare for future growth opportunities.

American Airlines will discontinue its flights between Santa Maria and Phoenix effective May 7, 2026, after less than a year of operation. The twice-daily route, launched in October 2025, did not meet performance expectations, resulting in low ticket sales.
Santa Maria Airport General Manager Martin Pehl stated that the board will have serious discussions regarding the budget in light of this decision. Factors contributing to low load factors included seasonal travel patterns and underutilization of the airport's potential, particularly regarding travel from Vandenberg Space Force Base. Pehl emphasized the airport's commitment to learn from this experience to ensure future viability.
