Sarawak Advances Circular Economy with Waste-to-Energy Initiative
Sarawak is enhancing its circular economy strategy in waste management through a waste-to-energy initiative, guided by Scandinavian practices. The state aims to treat waste as a resource, leveraging advanced technologies for treatment and energy conversion.

Sarawak has initiated a waste-to-energy initiative, emphasizing the importance of treating waste as a resource rather than a burden. Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg highlighted that the state has enacted a waste management law to facilitate this transition, allowing waste to be processed into usable products.
The newly unveiled gas-to-energy cogeneration prototype at the Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park (KIWMP) exemplifies this shift, currently producing five kilowatts of power from landfill methane. This project aligns with Sarawak's goal of enhanced waste management and increased industrial investments, which will necessitate advanced treatment technologies. If successful, the initiative could lead to scalable energy production and improved air quality, demonstrating the dual benefits of waste management innovation.
