Sasol Launches 2 kW PEM Electrolyser to Enhance Hydrogen Technology in South Africa
Sasol, alongside public and academic partners, has launched a 2 kW PEM electrolyser at its Sasolburg campus. This initiative aims to bolster local hydrogen production capabilities and support South Africa's transition to green energy.

Sasol has commissioned a 2 kW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser at its Research and Technology campus in Sasolburg, collaborating with the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation’s HySA programme, SANEDI, and North-West University. This project aims to test hydrogen production technologies and support local skills development.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance South Africa’s role in the green hydrogen market, emphasizing the importance of critical minerals, particularly platinum group metals, in future industries. Collaboration among government, industry, and academia is highlighted as essential for advancing hydrogen technologies and fostering economic growth in the region, ensuring that South Africa can capitalize on its renewable energy resources.
