Sassari University Develops Nanomaterials for Astronaut Cell Protection
The University of Sassari, with ViroStatics and the Sardinia Aerospace District, has developed nanomaterials to protect cells from oxidative stress during space missions. This initiative could enhance astronaut safety and lead to applications on Earth.

The SMARTS project from the University of Sassari has produced advanced materials aimed at combating oxidative stress in space. Funded by the PNRR, this research involves collaborations with the biotech company ViroStatics and the Sardinia Aerospace District, focusing on the effects of radiation and microgravity on astronaut health.
Laboratory experiments simulating space conditions demonstrated a protective effect on cellular models, with potential applications in protective paints and astronaut suit fabrics. The initiative aims to scale industrial applications and foster new collaborations at the national and European levels, positioning Sardinia as a key player in advanced materials research and the space economy.
