Saudi Arabia's NEOM Project Faces Major Setbacks and Strategic Shift
The NEOM project, including The Line, has stalled with only 2.4 km completed of a planned 170 km. Workforce reductions and a shift towards data centers as a potential solution reflect significant challenges in meeting original goals.

As of April 2026, only 2.4 km of the ambitious NEOM project, designed to span 170 km, has been completed, representing just 1.4% of the original plan. Construction was officially halted on September 16, 2025, with approximately 35% of the workforce laid off.
Audit reports suggest the total cost to complete The Line could reach $8.8 trillion, significantly exceeding Saudi Arabia's annual GDP of $1 trillion. A new strategic direction aims to convert parts of NEOM into data centers, with a $5 billion partnership with DataVolt announced.
Despite the setbacks, some NEOM components, such as the Sindalah resort island, are progressing, albeit on a smaller scale than initially envisioned. The future of The Line remains uncertain, with decisions dependent on various geopolitical and economic factors.
