Saudi Aramco Nears Completion of Wasit Gas Project Amid Processing Challenges

Saudi Aramco is close to completing the Wasit gas project, but it is currently processing gas from the Karan field instead of planned offshore sources. The plant is not expected to begin processing gas from the Arabiyah and Hasbah fields, which contain high levels of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, before year-end due to technical difficulties.

Solutions include expanding processing units to handle the sour gas, which is not critical at this time as peak demand has passed and reserves are sufficient. The Wasit program features multiple offshore and onshore facilities, with onshore processing capabilities including a central facility and a sulfur recovery unit. Risks arise from the impurities in sales gas potentially exceeding national grid standards if processing capacity is not optimized.
