Savannah Leaders Oppose Data Center Development Amid Infrastructure Concerns
Savannah's mayor and city manager have officially opposed data centers, stating they do not align with local economic goals. Nearby areas, however, like Port Wentworth, are exploring zoning regulations to manage potential data center projects.

Savannah officials, including Mayor Van Johnson and City Manager Jay Melder, have declared that data centers are not in line with the city’s growth vision, indicating there are no active proposals for such facilities in Chatham County. In contrast, Port Wentworth has approved a zoning amendment to regulate data centers, aiming to establish control and protections for future projects.
Georgia ranks among the top five states for data centers, boasting nearly 200 facilities statewide. The community continues to grapple with the implications of data centers, which can enhance local tax revenues but also raise concerns regarding their substantial electricity and water demands that could impact local infrastructure. A town hall meeting is scheduled for discussion on this topic.
