Schleswig-Holstein Ports Seek Increased Federal Funding for Infrastructure and Security Needs
Representatives from Schleswig-Holstein's government and the port association have requested increased federal funding for ports, emphasizing their critical role in climate protection, supply, and military security. The state demands €1.5 billion annually, significantly more than the current €140 million allocated for maintenance and expansion. The need for functional ports is underlined by their role in national security and the import of gas and hydrogen. The federal government has recognized the importance of ports in military logistics and decarbonization efforts.

At a meeting in Berlin, representatives from the Schleswig-Holstein government and the port association requested increased federal funding, highlighting the importance of ports for national climate protection, supply, and military security. The ports require €1.5 billion annually; however, only €140 million is currently allocated from the federal infrastructure fund.
The state is pushing for ten times this amount to meet rising demands. Ports are essential for military logistics and energy imports, including gas and hydrogen. Recent legislative support for CO2 storage in the North Sea further emphasizes the need for well-equipped ports to fulfill military mobility and climate commitments.
