Scotland Develops Advanced Space Ecosystem with CubeSat Manufacturing and Launch Infrastructure
Scotland is establishing itself as a significant player in Europe's space industry, with Glasgow leading in CubeSat manufacturing and Edinburgh processing data from over 10,000 active satellites. The region is developing launch infrastructure through companies like Orbex and Skyrora, with SaxaVord Spaceport aiming for 30 annual launches. However, concerns about the UK's competitive position persist as other countries increase their space funding amidst calls for greater support for the UK Space Agency.

Scotland is emerging as a key player in Europe’s space industry, with Glasgow becoming the continent's leading hub for CubeSat manufacturing. AAC Clyde Space, a Swedish-backed firm, has played a pivotal role since its first satellite launch in 2014, expanding into data services derived from its satellite fleet.
The ecosystem encompasses satellite manufacturing, launch capabilities, and data analysis, with Edinburgh's firms processing data from over 10,000 active satellites. Rocket companies Orbex and Skyrora, alongside SaxaVord Spaceport, are establishing launch infrastructure, with SaxaVord aiming for 30 launches annually.
Skyrora, which received the first UK launch license from SaxaVord this year, focuses on targeted missions. However, concerns arise over the UK’s competitive position as other countries ramp up funding for space initiatives amid declining UK investments. The UK government cites a £2.8 billion commitment to the UK Space Agency but faces calls for increased support to sustain growth.
