ScotRail to Launch New Multi-Billion Pound Train Fleet Starting 2027 Amid Challenges

HYDROGEN

ScotRail is set to replace most of its train fleet from mid-2027 with refurbished diesel trains and 70 new electric and battery-powered trains by 2031. The Scottish Government-owned operator anticipates a 'bumpy' introduction due to past issues with new fleets.

Plans for hydrogen or battery trains for rural lines have been shelved, leading to the continuation of older trains on certain routes. The introduction of the new fleet, which encompasses 70% of ScotRail's trains, aims to enhance accessibility and improve performance and reliability.

ScotRail managing director Joanne Maguire emphasized the need for a 'whole railway' approach to ensure the program's success, while also addressing the urgency of the project as the current fleet nears the end of its life. The new carriages will feature level access boarding and improved passenger environments.
