Scottish Schools Achieve Significant Waste Reduction Through Student-Led Initiatives
Students from six Scottish schools have developed innovative waste reduction strategies, saving an estimated £16,000 and preventing over 20,000 pieces of plastic waste. If scaled to all primary schools in Scotland, these initiatives could eliminate nearly 39 million single-use items and save over £31 million.

The Zero Waste Schools Pilot, conducted by Ostrero, showcased student-led projects aimed at waste reduction. Key initiatives included eliminating water bottles and making yogurts optional, resulting in significant savings and waste reduction.
Projects such as clothing reuse fairs and costume swaps further demonstrated the potential for reducing landfill contributions. The launch of the Zero Waste Schools Guide aims to expand these practices across Scotland's educational institutions. If implemented widely, these strategies could lead to substantial environmental and financial benefits, representing a critical step towards a circular economy.
