Second Pump Installed in Alexander Village to Combat Flooding
The Government of Guyana has installed a second drainage pump in Alexander Village to tackle severe flooding issues. This installation follows recent heavy rainfall, with officials indicating that the new pump will enhance the drainage capacity in Georgetown.
A second pump has been installed at the River View pump station in Alexander Village, increasing Georgetown's operational pumping capacity to 16 functional pumps. This decision was made following severe overnight rainfall that exacerbated flooding in vulnerable areas, particularly Alexander Village and Queenstown.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha reported that the additional pump will remain permanently in the community and improve drainage significantly once operational. Mustapha criticized the Mayor and City Council for not activating the Cowan Street sluice during low tide, despite heavy rainfall.
The Hydrometeorological Office has forecasted further rainfall, prompting authorities to remain vigilant and conduct preparatory works across the country. Guyana currently has 217 pumps available for deployment to flood-prone areas.
