Seneca Nation Challenges GCEDC's Lead Role in STREAM Data Center Review
The Seneca Nation is contesting the Genesee County Economic Development Center's (GCEDC) lead agency status for the SEQR review of the proposed STREAM data center, citing potential environmental risks to their territory. They have requested that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation take over the review, while GCEDC defends its expertise and previous responses to the Nation's concerns. The project, which aims to create 120 jobs, is projected to consume significant electricity and emit hazardous pollutants, despite proposed noise mitigation measures.

The Seneca Nation leaders are challenging the Genesee County Economic Development Center's (GCEDC) lead agency status for the SEQR review of the proposed STREAM data center, a 2.2-million-square-foot campus in Western New York. The Nation requested that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation assume lead agency status, citing risks to their territory and environmental impacts.
The project is expected to use 500 megawatts of electricity annually and emit hazardous pollutants. GCEDC argues it has the necessary expertise and has addressed previous concerns raised by the Nation. The project plans include significant noise mitigation measures and is projected to create 120 jobs upon completion.
