Senegal and Cape Verde Launch Joint Project for Plastic Waste Management

CIRCULAR ECONOMY & RECYCLING

Senegal and Cape Verde have launched a project to improve plastic waste management, titled 'Strengthening Senegal and Cape Verde's capacity to control, manage and reduce plastic waste in line with the Basel Convention.' The initiative aims to enhance institutional and technical capacities, promote a circular economy, and create green jobs.

Senegal faces challenges with over 250,000 metric tons of plastic waste annually, largely from single-use products, while Cape Verde contends with marine plastic waste affecting its ecosystems. Both countries have enacted laws and initiatives to combat plastic pollution, with Senegal's 2020 law banning problematic plastic products and Cape Verde's recent collaboration with the French Global Environment Facility to reduce pollution at the source.
