Senegal Opens First Battery Energy Storage Plant in Bokhol, West Africa
Senegal has inaugurated the Walo Storage plant in Bokhol, the first battery energy storage facility in West Africa, combining 16 MW of solar capacity with 10 MW of lithium-ion battery storage. The project, funded by a €40 million investment, aims to contribute to the government's goal of 40% renewable energy in the national mix, reducing CO2 emissions by 26,600 tons annually and creating 217 local jobs. The electricity generated will be sold to Senelec under a 20-year contract.

The governor of the Saint-Louis region, Al Hassane Sall, inaugurated the Walo Storage, the first battery energy storage plant in Senegal and West Africa, in Bokhol, Dagana department. This project features a combination of 16 MW solar photovoltaic capacity and 10 MW lithium-ion battery storage, with an estimated annual production of 36 GWh.
The electricity generated will be sold to Senelec under a 20-year take-or-pay PPA. This initiative aligns with the government's goal of achieving 40% renewable energy in the national energy mix. The project is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 26,600 tons annually and has created 217 local jobs. Funded by a €40 million investment from Africa Ren, with support from Senelec and financial partners such as FMO and EAIF-PIDG, Walo Storage represents a significant step in Senegal's energy transition.
