Shahjalal Fertilizer Factory Faces Production Disruptions Due to Mechanical Failures
The Shahjalal Fertilizer Company Limited (SFCL) in Fenchuganj, Sylhet, has experienced significant production disruptions due to ongoing mechanical issues, reporting seven to eight faults annually. After a seven-month gas supply suspension from March to September 2023, production resumed on 10 October, but a mechanical fault forced a shutdown within 22 hours.
Production was halted again after another 24 hours, leading to a week-long pause before operations resumed on 30 October. In the first ten months of the 2023-24 fiscal year, mechanical problems interrupted production ten times.
Past operational disruptions include a two-month shutdown due to a major fault and various issues since its establishment in 2010. The factory, designed to produce 580,800 tonnes of urea and 330,000 tonnes of ammonia annually, has struggled to meet production targets and has yet to turn a profit.
