Shahjibazar Power Plant Faces Ongoing Operational Challenges
Shahjibazar Power Plant has significantly underperformed, operating at just 37% of its capacity due to mechanical issues. The ongoing disruptions have led to losses exceeding Tk40,000 crore, impacting national electricity supply and financial stability.

The Shahjibazar Power Plant, located in Habiganj, has been generating only about 183MW of electricity, far below its 490MW capacity, primarily due to mechanical failures and fires. Since its 2017 launch, a 100MW gas turbine unit has faced repeated turbine blade issues, leading to a complete shutdown in April 2024.
The plant has operated for only 67 days in six years, resulting in estimated losses of nearly Tk18 crore per day from reduced output. While one unit currently generates between 100MW and 150MW, officials assert that without restoring all units, financial losses will continue, and pressure on the national grid will persist.
