Sheridan Fined for Ammonia Levels in Wastewater Effluent
Sheridan faces a $12,000 fine for ammonia exceedance in wastewater effluent, with revised testing requirements. The city is actively investigating the source of elevated ammonia levels and plans to implement corrective measures.

Sheridan has been fined $12,000 by the Department of Environmental Quality for exceeding ammonia limits in its wastewater. Revised testing protocols now require monthly ammonia measurements, as opposed to previous practices based on river flow levels.
Contributing factors to ammonia concentration include operations at the Sheridan Federal Corrections Institution, which has a high wastewater production concentration. The city is conducting sampling across four lagoons to identify sources of low oxygen contributing to the ammonia levels.
Plans for a new lagoon are included in the upcoming wastewater master plan budget, aimed at enhancing treatment capacity. The city is committed to safeguarding water quality and will report findings to the city council.
