Shetland's Energy Supply Misrepresented by Social Media Claims
Claims of Shetland being fully powered by wave energy are inaccurate. The region primarily relies on diesel and gas stations for electricity.

Recent social media claims stated that Shetland is entirely powered by wave energy generated by the Shetland Wave Energy Array, which allegedly uses 16 Mocean Energy Blue X converters to produce 8MW. However, this assertion is incorrect; the energy produced is insufficient for the island's 23,000 residents.
Currently, Shetland's power comes mainly from the Lerwick Power Station and the Sullom Voe Terminal. Although an interconnector cable has been built to link Shetland with Caithness, it primarily exports renewable energy rather than providing local power.
The National Grid connection is expected later this year, contingent on the Gremista battery storage system becoming operational. Misleading information regarding Shetland's energy sources could affect public perception and investment in sustainable energy solutions.
