Shivanasamudra Hydroelectric Power Plant Undergoes Major Turbine Overhaul by KPCL
The historic Shivanasamudra Hydroelectric Power Plant in Mandya district is refurbishing its 124-year-old turbines to enhance power generation. Established in 1900, the plant has 10 turbines with a capacity of 42 MW and aims for an annual output of 225 million units. The phased renovation, contracted to ANDRITZ, is set for completion by the end of 2026 with an expected cost of Rs. 103 crore.

The Shivanasamudra Hydroelectric Power Plant, Asia's first hydro-electric station, is undergoing a significant turbine refurbishment to improve efficiency. The Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) is renovating all 10 turbines, currently at different refurbishment stages, with the entire process expected to finish by the end of 2026.
ANDRITZ has been contracted for the project, which includes the supply and refurbishment of turbine equipment. The plant's maximum annual generation capacity is 367.92 million units, but recent output has fluctuated due to water availability. The project cost is projected at Rs. 103 crore.
