The European sHYpS project has finalized land-based testing in Staranzano, Italy, for a modular liquid-hydrogen storage system designed to facilitate vessel refueling. By utilizing swappable ISO-container tanks, ships could exchange depleted tanks for pre-filled ones, potentially reducing the need for dedicated bunkering facilities at every port.
The project aims to integrate liquid-hydrogen storage, fuel preparation, and fuel cells into a modular architecture suitable for various ship types, including cargo vessels. While the testing validated core components, further refinement and certification are required before commercial deployment.
